Battery-Powered Smart Grid: Shenzhen's Energy Storage and Ultra-Fast Charging Project Goes Live

Shenzhen has made a major stride in clean energy integration with the inauguration of its first “Power Cube + Ultra-Fast Charging” demonstration station. Located in the Dameisha Biosphere No. 3, this smart facility integrates advanced battery storage systems, solar energy generation, AI-based grid operation, and uninterruptible power supply capabilities. The project is part of the city’s commitment to building a near-zero carbon footprint urban area powered by next-generation energy storage and solar technologies.

Smart Battery Infrastructure: The “Power Cube”

At the center of the demonstration site is the futuristic “Power Cube” — a modular smart distribution room designed using pre-installed structures and mechanized construction methods. This cutting-edge unit reduces construction time by 86% and the overall footprint by 40%, compared to traditional substations. It features integrated solar photovoltaic panels, AI-powered operations, and a smart battery system for seamless energy storage and discharge. The system also acts as a uninterruptible power supply, ensuring power reliability in the event of grid failure.

Ultra-Fast EV Charging Powered by Clean Energy

The adjacent ultra-fast charging station is equipped with a 600 kW liquid-cooled, split-type charger — among the most advanced in the global market. It supports 500 kilometers of EV range with just 10 minutes of charging time. This fast-charging capability, backed by on-site solar energy and battery storage, helps eliminate EV range anxiety and reduces strain on the grid through vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. The site accommodates 13 simultaneous charging sessions, combining ultra-fast, fast, slow, and bi-directional charging modes.

Solar + Battery = A New Power Ecosystem

The integrated system serves as a demonstration of Shenzhen’s vision for a new-type energy infrastructure. Combining solar panels, battery systems, and intelligent load balancing, the project is designed to maximize renewable energy utilization and grid flexibility. It also leverages AI algorithms and big data analytics to enable predictive maintenance, optimal power dispatch, and real-time monitoring — essential for a smart energy storage network.

According to the Shenzhen Yantian Power Supply Bureau, this project aligns with broader efforts to establish a smart grid that is both resilient and sustainable. As one of China’s first near-zero carbon pilot zones, the Dameisha Biosphere No. 3 integrates technologies such as solar energy, lithium battery systems, and real-time energy storage management to create a scalable model for future eco-smart cities.

Future Expansion: Building a Low-Carbon Grid

The Shenzhen Power Bureau has announced that it will continue working with Vanke Group and the Meisha Subdistrict to expand the use of solar, battery, and energy storage technologies across the entire biosphere zone. Future plans include integrating more distributed battery units, upgrading solar inverters, and enhancing grid flexibility with AI-driven decision-making platforms.

This “Power Cube + Ultra-Fast Charging” demonstration station is more than just a charging site — it is a blueprint for how cities can combine solar energy, battery storage, and uninterruptible power supply systems to power electric vehicles, buildings, and industries in a sustainable and efficient way.

As global demand for energy storage, solar, and battery solutions accelerates, projects like this one in Shenzhen offer a glimpse into the future of green infrastructure. By combining high-efficiency solar panels, lithium-ion batteries, and intelligent uninterruptible power supply systems, urban centers can become more energy-independent, climate-resilient, and economically efficient.
