Brazil’s energy transition efforts continue to accelerate, driven by rising demand for grid modernization and integration of low-carbon technologies. The government has increasingly prioritized energy storage as a strategic enabler of system reliability, particularly under new regulatory frameworks supporting battery adoption. With Brazil preparing for its first national battery auction in 2025, the government is actively engaging with global technology leaders to localize advanced energy storage and EV infrastructure solutions. In this context, Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy met with Huawei executives in China to explore collaboration opportunities aligned with these national goals.

The Minister of Mines and Energy of Brazil, Alexandre Silveira, met last Sunday (April 20) in China with executives from Huawei, a global leader in technological solutions for the energy transition. The meeting strengthened the partnership between Brazil and China and focused primarily on the use of energy storage technologies, particularly batteries, in Brazil’s energy sector.
“The presence of the Ministry of Mines and Energy at the headquarters of leading sector companies reinforces Brazil’s commitment to the global energy transition. We want to foster partnerships that help make Brazil’s electricity system more modern, clean, and efficient, with batteries playing a key role in ensuring the stability and reliability of our energy matrix,” said Minister Silveira.
During the meeting with Wang Jianfeng, Huawei’s Global President of Public Affairs and Communications; Han Shuo, Head of Oil & Gas at Huawei Enterprise BG; and Jacky Gao, CEO of Huawei Brazil, discussions included cutting-edge technological solutions such as Battery Energy storage Systems (BESS). The Chinese company also presented ultra-fast chargers for electric vehicles and smart photovoltaic systems.
Silveira highlighted the importance of Brazil’s first battery auction, scheduled for this year, as a milestone in modernizing the national electric matrix. The initiative is expected to encourage large-scale adoption of storage systems, ensuring greater flexibility and security for the power grid, especially during peak demand or climate-related instability.
The agenda in China aims to identify technologies with potential application in the Brazilian context, focusing on accelerating the energy transition and positioning Brazil at the forefront of digital and sustainable solutions in the electricity sector. The minister’s visit is also part of the preparations for President Lula’s upcoming trip to the Asian country, scheduled for next month.
