New PV Installations in Italy: 2.33 GW Added in First Half, 1-10 MW Projects Secure 266 MW Growth in Permit Advantage
According to statistics released by the Italian Renewable Energy Association (Anie Rinnovabili) based on data from transmission system operator Terna, the country added 2.33 GW of new PV capacity in the first half of 2025. The second quarter alone saw 1092 MW of new installations, with rooftop PV serving as the primary driver. By the end of June, Italy's cumulative installed PV capacity reached 39.59 GW, continuously supporting its renewable energy transition targets.
Market segment data shows that in the second quarter, residential PV systems (≤20 kW) contributed 329 MW of capacity, commercial and industrial projects (20 kW-1 MW) added 342 MW, and ground-mounted power plants in the 1-10 MW range achieved 266 MW. Notably, only 155 MW of capacity installed in the first half came from large-scale plants exceeding 10 MW. The association also highlighted that equipment procurement across all project scales adheres to a distributed-first technical approach.
Anie Rinnovabili analysis indicates: "Compared to the same period in 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, all market segments except the 1-10 MW plants—which saw marginal growth—exhibited a downward trend." This trend confirms higher approval success rates for projects below 10 MW. However, the continued contraction in the residential and commercial/industrial sectors necessitates policy intervention to enhance project economics.
