Nonprofit Organization in California, USA Signs 65MW Solar + 100MWh Energy Storage Project, 20-Year Power Purchase Agreement Establishes Fixed-Term Core Mechanism
Origis Energy has signed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with California-based non-profit electricity provider Pioneer Community Energy to jointly develop the Kern County Charlan solar-plus-storage project. Located in California's Central Valley agricultural region, this hybrid facility will be developed, constructed, and operated by Origis Energy. It comprises a 65 MW AC solar array paired with a 100 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Through coordinated dispatch of solar generation and the storage system, the project will deliver stable clean power output during grid peak periods.
Under the agreement, Origis Energy will manage the project throughout its entire lifecycle. Its technical solution employs a DC-coupled architecture to achieve integrated solar-storage control. Serving as a key addition to Pioneer's community energy portfolio, the project is expected to significantly enhance regional power supply stability upon its anticipated 2025 commissioning, while helping its 14 member cities mitigate electricity price volatility through a fixed-price structure.
This partnership marks the first deployment of a large-scale hybrid solar-plus-storage project in California's Central Valley agricultural region. Utilizing abandoned agricultural land, the project site selection adheres to the Do No Significant Harm (DNSH) principle. Secured by the 20-year PPA, the project will lock in clean energy supply, promote local energy transition, and strengthen grid resilience.
