Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has introduced the National Energy Transition Policy (PNTE), a landmark initiative designed to position Brazil as a leader in the global green economy. Approved during a meeting of the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE), the PNTE is expected to attract BRL 2 trillion in investments over the next decade, driving the country's shift towards renewable energy.

Speaking at the event on August 26, Lula emphasized Brazil’s strong position in renewable energy, noting that the country already generates 80% of its electricity from renewable sources. “We must not miss the opportunities offered by the energy transition,” Lula remarked, adding that Brazil has all the resources, both natural and human, to lead this global transformation.

The PNTE will integrate existing government policies, including the National Climate Change Policy and the Ecological Transformation Plan. The overarching goal is to promote sustainable economic growth, create jobs, and ensure a fair and inclusive energy transition for Brazil’s economy.

Alexandre Silveira, Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy, highlighted the potential of Brazil's renewable energy sector, which includes wind, solar, hydropower, and green hydrogen. Silveira also emphasized the significance of the New Growth Acceleration Program (Novo PAC), which allocates BRL 700 billion for energy transition projects. Additionally, the government has passed a legal framework for green hydrogen, with 27 gigawatts of projects already registered, potentially bringing in BRL 200 billion in investments.

Brazil’s energy transition is also seen as a key driver of broader economic reform. Finance Minister Fernando Haddad praised the PNTE as a central pillar in transforming the Brazilian economy, particularly in conjunction with critical reforms like the ongoing tax overhaul, which aims to foster sustainable growth.

In addition to the PNTE, the CNPE approved several other measures aimed at expanding Brazil's energy and industrial sectors. These include updates to the commercialization policies for oil and natural gas, as well as new guidelines to decarbonize oil and gas production activities. Furthermore, Petrobras was granted the right to explore new oil and gas blocks under Brazil’s production-sharing regime, with the potential to generate billions in government revenue and create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

These initiatives underline Brazil’s ambition to play a pivotal role in the global energy transition while fostering domestic industrial growth through sustainable practices.
