Sungrow Powers Chile's Largest Independent Energy Storage Station, Pushing Chile's Energy Storage to New Heights

Sungrow recently announced a significant partnership with Atlas Renewable Energy, the largest and fastest-growing independent renewable energy generator in Latin America. According to the agreement, Sungrow will exclusively supply its advanced liquid-cooled energy storage system, PowerTitan, to support Atlas in constructing the 200MW/880MWh BESS del Desierto project in northern Chile. This project will significantly alleviate local curtailment issues, enhance regional energy reliability, and assist Chile in achieving its ambitious goal of 100% clean energy by 2050.

Located in the Atacama Desert, the BESS del Desierto project benefits from abundant solar resources. However, due to the limitations of the grid's transmission capacity, not all generated energy can be delivered to key consumption areas 1,500 kilometers away. Atlas Renewable Energy plans to build Chile's largest independent large-scale energy storage station, storing excess solar energy during the day and seamlessly injecting it into the grid when transmission capacity allows. This innovative approach will significantly enhance the flexibility and sustainability of regional energy use. Atlas estimates that approximately 280GWh of additional electricity will be transmitted to the grid annually, effectively mitigating Chile's curtailment issues.

In the face of the harsh environment of the Atacama Desert, including heavy dust and extreme temperature fluctuations exceeding 30°C, the PowerTitan energy storage system ensures optimal temperature control and system stability with its C5 anti-corrosion, IP65 sand and dust resistance, intelligent liquid cooling, and intelligent operation and maintenance systems, ensuring long-term operational reliability of the project.

Sungrow's PowerTitan also features advanced grid-forming technology, providing millisecond-level active and reactive power response, frequency regulation, voltage regulation, and harmonic suppression. These technologies not only enhance grid stability but also significantly strengthen the local grid, effectively addressing the challenges of long-distance transmission and complex grid dispatching, and providing Chile with a more stable energy supply.

"BESS del Desierto is Atlas's first energy storage project and an important milestone in our expansion into the energy storage sector. It represents a major strategic effort to improve Latin America's energy reliability through the efficient use of solar resources. We are very pleased to take this step together with our long-term partner, Sungrow," said Patrick Valentin, Head of Strategic Procurement at Atlas Renewable Energy.

This is not the first time Sungrow's PowerTitan has supported a large energy storage project in Chile. In 2023, Sungrow supplied 232 units of the PowerTitan ST2752UX energy storage system for the 181MW/638MWh energy storage project in Antofagasta, Chile.
