Spain Approves Innovative Renewable Energy Project, €148.5M Funding for Mandatory Energy Storage with 351.6MWh Capacity to Establish Five-Year Performance Monitoring
Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) approved €148.5 million in recovery funds on August 6, 2025, to finance 199 innovative renewable energy projects—all incorporating battery storage systems. The initiative will add 299.6MW of new generation capacity (primarily photovoltaic) and 351.6MWh of storage, constructing a "power vault" for intermittent solar output. Geographically, Catalonia (79 projects), Valencia (30), Castile and León (17), and Andalusia (13) emerge as key deployment zones, demonstrating broad integration of PV plants with storage.
Under the RENOINN plan (Innovative Renewable Energy Program), five incentive categories were prioritized: Agri-PV systems with storage received the highest funding—€77.1 million for 62 projects (including 19 in Valencia and 13 in Catalonia). These facilities combine crop cultivation with PV generation, utilizing storage to capture surplus electricity for nighttime agricultural operations. Owners must submit annual reports for five consecutive years on PV performance and agricultural impact. Floating PV secured €10.1 million for 11 projects, predominantly deploying self-consumption plants on agricultural irrigation ponds; water-cooled PV arrays coupled with batteries stabilize intermittent output. Infrastructure-integrated systems (Sub-plan 3) allocated €23.4 million to 27 innovative schemes, deploying 45.6MW and 133.2MWh of storage along roads/brownfield sites to validate storage’s stabilizing role in unconventional settings. Community energy initiatives granted €18.2 million to 67 shared PV-storage projects, benefiting approximately 4,000 vulnerable households.
The Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) will oversee technical review, fund disbursement, and five-year performance monitoring. The geographic distribution highlights regional balance, while mandatory pairing of 351.6MWh storage with ~300MW PV capacity marks Spain’s renewable policy transition from "PV-only" to an "on-demand storage-release" model.
