The Bhutanese government has awarded the 120MW Jamjee photovoltaic power station project to a consortium comprising local company Rigsar Construction and India's HILD Energy. Upon completion, this project will become the country's largest solar facility, marking tangible progress in the Himalayan region's clean energy transition. Procurement entity Druk Green Power Corporation received three bids in the tender earlier this year, ultimately selecting the winning consortium based on the principle of the lowest evaluated bid price.

The Rigsar-Hild consortium will be fully responsible for the design, equipment supply, construction, installation, commissioning, and grid connection of the 120MW power plant. Located on 385 acres (156 hectares) of state-owned reserve forest land 25 kilometers from the capital Thimphu, this project follows Bhutan's first utility-scale solar project—the 17.38MW plant—and will significantly boost regional renewable energy capacity.

According to the national energy policy enacted this year, Bhutan has set a strategic target of achieving 25GW of renewable energy capacity by 2040, which includes a 5GW solar-specific plan. Data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows the country's installed solar capacity has grown from 1MW at the end of 2023 to 3MW by the end of 2024. The implementation of this 120MW project will serve as a crucial milestone in achieving national energy goals.
