Traditional solar financing institutions have long rigidly overlooked small-to-medium solar projects, particularly those in the 150 kW to 5 MW "messy middle" range. These projects typically do not fit standardized loan models designed for homeowners with high FICO Scores. The historical dominance of residential and utility-scale projects has resulted in lagging project financing for small-to-medium businesses, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), non-profits, and community groups.

To address this, Sunrock Distributed Generation and its sister company Sunstone Credit developed an underwriting mechanism that analyzes an organization's financial information without requiring a credit rating. This allows customers to secure projects with no upfront costs via Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). However, these projects remain constrained by administrative burdens, such as executing documents like letters of intent and Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) agreements, whose complexity does not diminish with smaller scale.

Sunrock President Claire Broido Johnson stressed that educating EPCs and developers is a key challenge. Consequently, the company built a nationwide network of over 700 EPCs to facilitate project deployment. She predicts a shift in the solar workforce towards commercial projects and notes that despite strong macro drivers—solar having the lowest installation costs and increasing grid congestion—financing demand persists to lock in fixed electricity rates.
