What is the 3-phase Padmounted Transformer?

The 3-phase pad-mounted transformer is an electrical device used for the distribution of power safely, reliably, and efficiently mainly in residential, commercial, and light industrial sites. Characterized both by its tamper-resistant enclosure and its installation on a concrete pad at ground level, this cell is enclosed. With this design, overhead power lines are eliminated and safety, aesthetics, and easy maintenance are improved. The transformer works on three-phase electrical systems, which are usually supplied to carry higher power at the usually more efficient than single phase systems. Three sets of windings– primary and secondary are configured inside the unit to reduce the high-voltage electricity from the distribution network to a lower voltage compatible with end users. The design guarantees equal power distribution among the three phases, reducing energy losses and keeping the voltage balance of the system. This equipment is pad mounted with bushings and connection points completely enclosed to prevent unauthorized entry, making them good for urban or suburban environments where public safety is of concern.

What do pad-mounted transformers do?

Modern power distribution systems depend on pad-mounted transformers to reduce high-voltage electricity coming down the main distribution lines to lower voltages which can be safely and efficiently utilized by homes, businesses, and industrial facilities. Typically installed at ground level and housed in secure, tamper-proof enclosures, these units are most suitable for use where overhead transformers are impracticable or undesirable (urban or suburban scene). At high voltages, up to 7.2 kV, and 35 kV, these transformers take electricity and convert it to the usable voltages suitable for the connected load, e.g. 120/240 V or 480 V. To guarantee safe power for consumers to operate and interconnected equipment, they lower the voltage which in turn lowers the power that is being delivered to them. Pad-mounted transformers not only provide connection points from underground power distribution networks to end-user facilities but also provide temporary connection points for systems installed for repairs. They replace the need for exposed overhead lines, making them safer, more beautiful, and more resistant to disruptive weather or outside interference. Components are protected in their secure enclosures from tampering, vandalism, and environmental factors such as rain, snow, and debris.

Are pad-mounted transformers grounded?

That is to say, pad-mounted transformers are ground at the time of installation to ensure safety, proper operation, and system reliability. A system of power distribution with multiple functions is, however, dependent on grounding, that is, a critical matter concerning their design and the functioning of the system. Grounding pad-mounted transformers form a safe path for the fault current to flow to the earth thereby reducing the chance of electrical shock or equipment damage caused by short circuits, lightning strikes, or insulation failure. Normally a transform transformer’s grounding system consists of a grounding conductor connecting the grounding or metal enclosure, the internal components, and (if applicable) the neutral point to a grounding rod or grid buried in the ground. It also provides the transformer with a reference point for its voltage levels in the electrical system and helps stabilize the transformer voltage levels. It minimizes voltage fluctuations and makes sure the system is operating in its designed parameters. In addition, the transformer and connected equipment are protected from transient events such as switching surges or lightning, by grounding.
