General methods for improving lithium-ion battery life


Researchers have developed a widely applicable and versatile electrode process. It can be applied to a range of conventional anodes to improve their stability.


Related studies show that the charge and discharge cycle of lithium-ion battery will lead to the change of anode volume and reduce the battery capacity and cycle life. Now, researchers at a related research institute have developed a new way to strengthen the anode and tweak it to make it last longer.


Over time, charging and discharging can cause the nanoparticles in the anode to crack and accumulate near the electrode electrolyte, the agency said. This can cause electrical disconnection, reducing the amount of charge the anode can store or transfer. To solve this problem, researchers at related institutions developed a method that allows the anode to adjust to changes in volume by encapsulating the nanoparticles in an elastic mesh structure.


The researchers show how they used a conventional anode containing silicon nanoparticles, held together by a polymer binder, while adapting to the mesh structure.


The Spaces between the nanoparticles were then filled with a RGO solution, which dried to form a network that held the nanoparticle silicon particles together and prevented them from breaking. In addition, the network provides a conductive path for the electrons, allowing the nanoparticles to bind to the lithium.


The researchers used a novel technique to coat the anode with reduced graphene oxide. The RGO coating acts as a seed layer and is used to deposit a protective layer consisting of zinc oxide and magnesium and gallium metal oxides added to it. It provides the structural stability of the anode.


The researchers say the technology maintains a high storage capacity after 500 cycles, which could extend battery life. This technology will provide more sufficient power for electric vehicles that can travel long distances on a single charge, and will also make positive contributions to the development of new energy.
