The University of Arkansas signed up for solar power
The University of Arkansas recently signed a 25-year agreement for solar services that could save millions of dollars in electricity costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8.8 percent.
A 25-acre solar facility will be built near the campus and in the first year will help save more than $200,000, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of taking more than 1,000 cars off the road for a year.
In 2007, the University of Arkansas became one of the first charter signatories to the climate pledge from US colleges and universities, and established a goal of becoming net carbon neutral by 2040.
Universities are working to reduce carbon emissions by combining sustainable building practices, energy efficiency upgrades, and sustainable commuter transportation options. The university is seeking more opportunities for renewable energy development as part of an ongoing effort to reduce financial risk while becoming an environmentally responsible school.
